Provides a broad review of the theoretical research in magnetic ordering of nanoscale and nanocomposite magnetic materials as permanent magnets, in addition to magnetic recording media. Additional advanced materials discussed include hard and soft magnets, composite magnets, spintronic materials and magnetocaloric materials. Among the applications described are the bottom-up approaches to fabrication of nanocomposite magnets and domain-wall based recording principles and devices.
