Comunity-built projects illustrate how the process of local involvement in adapting, building, and preserving a built environment can strengthen communities. The examples in this volume illustrate three main domains where comunity-built has been particularly effective: in promoting residents' right to adapt their environment to fit particular local needs; in helping residents define and express their cultural identity; and in developing capacity through strengthened social capital and the empowerment of individuals.
