This book provides a comprehensive analysis of Japanese literature and film through the interpretive lens of trauma studies, focusing on depictions of protagonists who dissociated their childhood and adolescent traumas, failed to mourn their losses and developed psychological defense mechanisms of incorporation, substitution and revenge. This volume also concentrates on literary and filmic texts in which traumatized protagonists are eventually able, through the creation of narrative memory and other means, to effect partial and advanced recovery.
