This book demonstrates the close link between Medicine and Japanese Buddhism. Chapters on Buddhism and human medicine, materia medica and pharmacognosy, and veterinary medicine lead to a reconsideration of categories deriving from the Western intellectual tradition, such as 'magic'. This topical study suggests focusing more on the syncretic and plural nature of the Japanese healing system as encountered in the primary sources.
