This book provides the first international survey of origins stories in national museums, covering China, North and South America, the Middle East, Europe and Australia. It examines the ways in which national museums use the past as a vehicle to reflect the concerns of the political present, arguing that they tell us more about the community the nation wishes to be today, than how or why it came into being.
