Across North America, colonial states paid citizens for killing, captive taking, scalping, beheading, and other forms of performative violence against Indians. As they struggled to prevail over Indigenous forces they considered barbaric and savage, European military and civilians alike engaged in not just plundering, slaving, and killing but also dismemberment of corpses for symbolic purposes and for profit.
