"Mathematics for Elementary Teachers: A Contemporary Approach, 10th Edition makes readers motivated to learn mathematics. With new-found confidence they are better able to appreciate the beauty and excitement of the mathematical world. The new editionof Musser, Burger, and Peterson's best-selling textbook focuses on one primary goal: helping students develop a true understanding of central concepts using solid mathematical content in an accessible and appealing format. The components in this complete learning program work in harmony to help achieve this goal. The Tenth Edition features the Common Core Standards to accompany the NCTM standards that are integrated throughout the text"--

Musser (mathematics, Oregon State U.), Peterson, and Burger help future elementary and middle school educators teach elementary math material and understand the underlying concepts. The text is aligned with recommendations in the Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences' The Mathematical Education of Teachers, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' (NCTM) Standards Documents, and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. It stresses problem solving, deductive reasoning, and technology. Topics follow the order of whole numbers, fractions, integers, rationals, and reals. Those related to number systems are organized by their historical evolution and development in the elementary/middle school curriculum, fractions and integers are treated separately as an extension of whole numbers, and rational numbers are discussed as extensions of fractions and integers. Geometry is organized from the perspective of the five-level van Hiele model of a child's development and by shapes and measurement, then Euclidean congruence and similarity, coordinates, and transformations. Additional topics include elementary logic and clock arithmetic. This edition has added mathematical tasks, new discussion of fractions on a number line to align with the Common Core Standards, and discussion of recommendations by the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education document, the NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, and the steps of statistical problem solving. It has a revised geometry chapter, new measurement examples, access to videos of children solving problems and walk-throughs of major points in each chapter, revised children's literature connections and research notes, added notes on Common Core standards, and professional recommendation statements from the Common Core and NCTM.
